With many fantasy drafts already completed and numerous Web sites showing results of those drafts, it appears that the consensus is that San Diego’s LaDainian Tomlinson is the #1 pick. Well, I’m not with the consensus.
In a big one-year league draft that I have upcoming, I have the #1 pick. Unless something huge happens between now and draft night, I’m taking Minnesota’s Adrian Peterson.
I can make a legit argument for AP, as obviously many can make that same argument for LT to be in the top spot, but I have to be honest, what happened in the playoffs last season really bothers me.
Tomlinson has been a great running back and a fantasy stud for years. However, when his team needed him the most, he didn’t or couldn’t go. I’m sure his knee hurt bad, but that was his team’s chance to do something in the playoffs. The Chargers managed to beat the choking Colts without LT for much of the game and put up a decent fight against the Patriots without him for just about all of it. For LT to miss those games, his knee had to be so bad that he needed surgery after the season — but he didn’t. His QB Philip Rivers, who clearly can be a knucklehead at times, did need surgery after the season, but he put on his warrior helmet and played hurt against the Pats.
When AP got hurt last season, he tried to prove to the coaches that he was ready to go and wanted to play in the game against the Giants. He ran before the game to try and show he could go, but the staff decided to wait one more week.
Give me the guy who wants it. I won’t argue with those who take LT first. There are more of you out there than there are of me. I’ll take my chances with AP though and we’ll see at the end of the season who was right.
Oh, and if you do one of those online drafts — make sure you take the Adrian Peterson on Minnesota, not the one on Chicago (at least not in the first few rounds).
